He hated being nervous, because to him, being nervous meant not being fully in control. He needed to be in control. ”Breathe, breathe, breathe,” he mumbled to himself, exercising the breathing techniques that he had been taught months ago to calm his nerves.
“You know…” a hand on his shoulder pulled him out of his thoughts, and his head turned slightly sideways to see his band mate giving him a reassuring smile. “Being nervous means that you care, that your heart is in this.” Changmin’s smooth voice instantly repelled some of his anxiety. “Embrace it. Make it your own.”
Minho worried his lower lip and exhaled a deep, shuddering breath. “Hyung, what if I mess up out there?” his large eyes followed the ray of lights to peek out from backstage, cringing at the new flood of what ifs weighing his heart. The hand curled a little more tightly on his shoulder, lightly massaging the tense muscles through his leather jacket.
“Then you learn from your mistakes, and you let me take care of you,” Changmin’s smile grew even wider. “I’ve got your back.”
Minho willed a tiny smile when the hand fell off his shoulder, inhaling and exhaling deeply. The microphone in his hand twirled absently between his fingers and he gave a curt nod. “I’m ready.”
Changmin’s hands appeared on his back, giving a light push. “It’s your time to shine, Minho-ya.”
The slightly taller man’s voice was soft near Minho’s ear, washing away all of his fears and filling him with renewed confidence. His feet moved forward as Changmin maneuvered them both to the center stage, and Minho knew everything would be all right…
Because he knew that Changmin was right behind him.
